new loads to the lab this summer

Postby hawglips » Tue Jun 21, 2016 1:43 pm

Given the uncertainty of availability of the VP90 wad in the future, I am working on some 20 ga loads with other wads to give a good selection of different payload options for customers.

The payloads include 9/16, 3/4, 7/8, 1, 1-1/8, and 1-1/4 oz. In addition to those, I'm also working on a couple 1-5/8 oz alternatives for turkey hunters.

In the 12 gauge, I'm working on a 2-3/4" 2-1/4 oz load, as well as a 3" 2-3/8 oz load - for turkey hunters.

I can"t wait for the 20ga loads in 9/16 and 3/4!

Roll with it. If you stay above 55 the wheel wont fall off.

Lab reports came back, and I need to keep going on them. The pressures are a good bit lower than expected on all of the 7 twenty gauge loads. Got plenty of room to push them faster, so I'll do that and get updated reports.

I'm also working on a new turkey load concept this summer. Those are still months away from completion, but will be ready by turkey season if they work as hoped.

I pushed the several 20 ga loads a bit hotter, and sent them back off to the lab. Did the opposite for the extra heavy twelves.

Should have reports the first week of August, in time to prepare for duck season....

I'm especially anxious to get to the range to test the new concept turkey loads in .410, 28, 20 and 12 gauge. It's been indicated to me that it won't do what I hope they will do, but since it's plowing new ground, we won't know for sure till it's put to the test. The bad news is I won't be able to get to the range at all between now and the first weekend of August, if then...

Got the latest reports back on the 20 gauge loads and here's what they look like:

1-1/8 oz: 1360 fps, 7918 psi

1 oz: 1412 fps, 7263 psi

7/8 oz: 1305 fps, 7467 psi

3/4 oz: 1351 fps, 5778 psi

9/16 oz: 1624 fps, 6428 psi

I'm probably going to leave them be for this year, and just jack the powder charge up a grain or so with the 3/4 oz and 9/16 oz load for field use for now.

Wow those pressures are low!
Were the results consistent, or did the low pressures give erratic burn results?
thx!
