Rio 2.75" TSS Duplex Load Discussion

Postby Bucky23kv » Sat Feb 16, 2019 11:23 am

Let's just start off by saying I'm new to reloading (I'm a total nerd and love this crap) and I've started down this road because I bought some hulls without doing my homework. Now...I'm searching for a load that works with these hulls...but I think I've found.

From the BPI Advantages Manual:

Load ID: 120517-3906 for 12 gauge Rio 2.75" Hull
Rio / Rio 209 Primer / A-Steel Powder - 37gr / PT1260 Wad / 1/8 felt wad / 7/8 oz. steel / 8000 PSI - 1410 FPS

Load ID: 91118-1577 for 12 gauge Rio 2.75" Hull
Rio / Rio 209 Primer / A-Steel Powder - 37gr / PT1265 Wad / No filler / 1 oz. steel / 7800 PSI - 1395 FPS

I don't see the PT1265 anywhere...but I do see the PT1260 and everything listed on it says that it holds 1oz. steel. Am I just dealing with some old data? I'm wanting to do the 1oz. load with the PT1260 (it seems to make more sense).

I have also read that some of the data in the BPI Manual is a little outdated and some understated on pressures. 37gr of Steel on this load seems to be a lot (just from comparisons).

My end load would be:
A-Steel (33-37gr...depending on more research) / PT1260 Wad / 1/8 felt wad / 1/4 oz. TSS - 3/4 oz. steel

Any thoughts/help on this is much appreciated. Feel free to point out misconceptions and misinterpretations...I can handle the criticism...not a snowflake.

Thanks.
Chris

I've been doing my duplex TSS x steel loads without fillers. For my 1 oz loads I use a published recipe for 1 oz loads but use a 7/8 oz steel wad. The wad is of the same style as the 1 oz load. Same thing for 1.125 oz duplex loads. I use a published recipe but sub the same style 1.0 oz wad in the 1.125 oz recipe. If you find a recipe for a 1.125 oz load, you could do a .25 oz TSS x .875 oz steel duplex in the 1.0 oz steel wad. I reread your post, if you could find a 7/8 oz wad, that would hold your 1.0 oz duplex without fillers.

Thanks Paul. I’m on the right line of thinking then it sounds. I’m particularly concerned about the powder. It just seems like a lot and I’ve read a lot of forums that have me proceeding with caution on using some of the BPI manual loads.

And I believe the 1253 is the 7/8 oz steel wad...but I’ll have to confirm that.

I'm not too keen of the loads published by BPI, and I'm pretty sure that sentiment is shared by others. I use data from Precision Reloadings Lightning Steel manual and the online recipes from the Alliant website for STEEL powder. I don't think there are a plethora of published loads for Rio hulls. I prefer Federal Gold Medals with a Fed primer. I get Fed hulls from Papcharlie. Google Papcharlie. Rio and Fed are both straight wall hulls, they both work well with the same style wad.
