.7 rule for shot density

I’m new to shotshell reloading. I’ve read in several topics about pattern density about the ( .7 rule ) to check pattern density at different distances. Can someone explain this rule and how it works. I’m currently working on a load of TSS for turkey hunting and would like to optimize it for best performance. Thanks

All it is, is a way to estimate what your pattern density would be at longer ranges, after establishing it at 40 yds. It's something I noticed over the years, and it seems to be fairly accurate.

Here's the way I use it. If a shell will put X pellets in a 10" circle at 40 yds consistently, then multiply the X by .7 to see what it will do at 50 yds, then multiply that number by .7 to see what it will do at 60 yds, etc.
