Alliant 300MP substitution?

Postby kculbert2 » Sat Jul 31, 2021 8:17 pm

I'd like to try a load that uses Alliant 300MP powder, but with the shortage of, well, EVERYTHING right now, I can't find that powder. Any ideas for a substitution? The recipe is for a .410 3/8 load and calls for 23 grns of Alliant 300MP. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What powders do you have? I’m sure others can weigh in, but LILGun, .410 Powder, h110 and others, may be options. If the 300mp has very low pressure, you may have some room to work up load data.

I just went thru this very same thing. Hogden H110 and Winchester 296 are VERY close. I did end up finding some 300mp. My next problem was trying to find a bushing that dropped 23 gr of the 300mp from my MEC reloader. I found data for the h110, but it was a little off in the MEC reloader for 300mp. A number 18 dropped about 22.5 gr, and that was as close to 23gr as I could get without doing it manually for each hull. And as fine and messy as this powder is you are not going to want to do that. My results were good. Good luck!

Have you shot it? What was your overall load using? TSS 9’s?

So, good news is my number 18 bushing in the MEC does seem to be dropping 23 gr of alliant 300mp, or pretty darn close. I think my scale was off a bit before. I started re-"zeroing" it with each new shell and the drop was more consistent than I previously thought. Use an 18. My numbers were pretty close to the recipe, give or take 10-12 fps either direction. Around 1515 fps.

That’s pretty fast, are you destroying the crimps? H110 seems to leave them burned up. How’s the patterns?

I roll crimp. Yes, the tips are a bit burned up. You may still be able to roll them again though; haven't tried it yet. As for the pattern, I actually just did that tonight, in preparation for the upcoming michigan duck opener. I just bought an ATI Calvary .410 which is what I used. I patterned the gun at 30 and 40 yards with full, imp modified and modified chokes. All of them were impressive, with a large enough spread to hit something, but tight enough that nothing is slipping thru. I didn't go beyond 40, bc I probably won't shoot at a duck much further than that anyway.
