Help tps20 wad load data

Postby Blinds70 » Wed Jul 07, 2021 9:17 pm

Hi brandon here I’m new to shotshell reloading and obviously tss. Only getting into shotshell reloading to load tss. I’m a big time waterfowler. I shoot 20 ga and have for a couple years. And that’s been with factory steel. Never going back to a 12. I’m hoping this forum can help me with some load data and recipes which I’ve been having a hard time finding especially with tps20 wads and rio hulls. Anyone want to help me with some good 20ga loads to start with?
I’ve got primed rio 2.75 hulls
TPS 20 wads
Sphero18 #7 and steel #2,#3,#4 shot for some duplex loads
Lil gun powder.
Cork filled wad
Overshot cards
Was going to roll crimp
Any information would be greatly appreciated

Welcome to reloading Brandon.
The limited number of recipes is an issue. Hopefully someone can provide some help for the components you have.

Ya I’ve tried to reach out to hawglips to buy some #9 shot cause I understand that he will provide you with load data if you buy from him. But I haven’t gotten a response yet. Is he still selling tss? Ive come to realize that my #7 shot I got for duplex loads isn’t the best and want to buy some #9-#9.5 shot. But now I have 6lbs of #7 that I’d like to make into a 3/4 or 7/8 load for honkers and all I can find are 1 5/8 oz which I’m guessing is a Turkey load that is probably to tight for waterfowl

Cant help much with the TPS wad , but if you can get the BP28 20G wad and Maxim SSB150 i use a cracking 24g steel load.

Is that a pure tss load? I’ve been trying to get my hands on some steel powder for the 20ga steel and Lil gun seem to have the best velocity. Since I’m mainly duplexing I’ve been looking at the high velocity loads the most. Can’t help but think that a screaming fast 3/4 load with .25 of #9 or 9.5 brutal on mallards within 40-45 yards?

You're going to want Lil gun for your 20 ga steel duplex loads. I've had 3 powders tested with 20 ga duplex loads and Lil gun is by far superior. For lightweight straight TSS 20 ga loads I prefer hodgdon longshot. It burns very clean and is great for the light loads, but it builds too much pressure for the heavier loads. I have a 3/4 oz 2 3/4" 20 ga load that I had tested with longshot that is over 1400 FPS. The issue is that TSS is extremely dense, so a 3/4 oz charge is a really short shot column. This means that you have to use a ton of filler in the wads to fill the wad up. 32 ga nitro cards, 28 ga cork, and 28 ga felt. It's an expensive load!!

By the way, Lil Gun is in stock at Ballistic Products right now!

Ya I have all of the the 28ga cork wads and got in on the BPI powder. Have 4lbs of lil gun on the way. Longshot was the other powder I was looking at along with steel. There’s some 2.75 3/4 steel loads using steel powder in one of my books listing velocities at 1600-1700fps with .5 of #3-4 with .25 #9-10 that seems like it could do the trick. I have 6lbs of tss #7 I’d like to put into a light pure tungsten load for the heck of it. I’ve shot 20ga for 4 seasons now and except for a couple hunts last season done all my shooting with 3” #3-#4 steel. Never felt out gunned unless I was shooting honkers and even then I managed a couple doubles on honkers last season. I’m just enjoying trying to get the best out of my 20ga and don’t really care about the money.

I only load one 2 3/4" steel duplex with alliant steel powder. It's a slow load and borderline on pressure, I got it from Hal. It uses a once fired hull so it's cheap to make and loads like a dream. It could easily be a 1400 FPS load with lil gun, I just haven't gotten around to changing it. It's 7/8 oz though. Your idea on the 3/4 oz load could work and with the popular 3/9 blend you would have 168 pellets which isn't bad for a mallard load.

Do you have any 3" hulls? You could up that pellet count from 168 to 230 with a 3" load. My 3" steel duplex is 1-1/16 oz and has 137 gr of TSS and 328 gr of Steel which gives roughly 230 pellets with the 3/9 blend. It also gives 111 pellets with a BB/7 blend, more than 3.5" 12 ga BB steel shot. That would be a good application for your 7's, it is a hammer goose load!

Ya I’d like to keep all my duplex loads in the 1400fps plus. I have some new 3” cheddite hulls. Ive reloaded rifles for years but haven’t really done any shotgun shell Reloading. I’m confident I’ll figure it out but with my lack of experience I’m hesitant to do anything but follow a recipe tell I get the hang of it. I bought some shot from Hal and he gave me some good recipes but I do lack some of the components and cant find them at the moment. I’d like to do the 3” load he sent me but can’t find any SAM wads. I have csd20 and 2092 and tps wads right now. Hulls are the only other thing I’m lacking from some of his recipes. I have the 3” cheddite hulls and 2.75 rio hulls. Im gonna try duplexing some of the steel loads in my reloading books.
