5s for geese

Postby oddball » Tue Jan 19, 2021 6:23 pm

I shoot at mostly gaint canadas pass shooting and use a 10 ga mag from what I find on my kyp program it looks like number 5s would be a good choice launched at 1450fps is this doable using bpi tps wads. any suggestions

5's work great for big geese. I use a 12 GA 23/4 inch load from Hal and it is great. Use the same load for Sandhills in Manitoba. You won't need the 10 but it will do well.

We shoot the same size canadas , I use 7s in the 20g for Pass/flighting geese and 7s do the job.

mjy03 I like vintage 16 gauge side by side guns and have been hunting with them exclusively. I was looking at steel shot so I bought a 10 I just did not want to risk my old doubles. The reason I picked the 1450fps load is it has the same flight time as my steel loads, steel 1 barrel tss backup.

The muzzle velocity of TSS shot and steel shot being the same when it leaves the barrel doesn't mean it will be the same at longer distances. The TSS shot will get there much quicker than the steel shot will.

From KPY Shotshell Ballistics

1450 fps steel BB shot gets 2.20" of gel penetration at 46.5 yards and is going 723 fps at 46.5 yards and it takes .146 seconds to travel 46.5 yards.
1450 fps TSS #5 shot gets 4.54" of gel penetration at 46.5 yards and is going 866 fps at 46.5 yards and it takes .130 seconds to travel 46.5 yards.
