20 GA 1/2 oz TSS Load

So I have been kicking around a 1/2oz 20 ga load. I know Dave In AZ loves the sub gauges and I do too. So my thoughts would be to have a #9s or #9.5s in a 1/2 oz load somewhere in the 1300 - 1400 fps. With # 9s I would have 181 pellets to work with.Im just looking for input here before I go down this road.

9.5s @ 0.075" diam gives 217pellets / half-ounce. At 1400fps, 1000'msl, 32F, they achieve 1.5" gel penetration (mallard) to 62yards.

Not sure how you'd get such a light load... Hal has 2 loads I know for 20ga, with a CSD20 wad into which you stuff an HV28 wad and THEN put inside some more filler 1/16" NC, and it STILL holds 1oz! For 1/2oz, I think you'd really need to be shooting 28ga or 410. For 20ga, maybe if you used a 3/4oz cb1075 wad, then put a cut-down HV28 inside that? Or the 7/8oz wad. One of those might about do it.

HERE's a BETTER IDEA: Use STELL SHOT as your filler! This is why I am a fan of steel/tss duplex loads, at least on paper. Why go to such extreme lengths to fill your hull with air? Why not just fill it up with #2 steel shot? Or use #B shot for a proper ballistic match:


TSS 9.5 duck 65 yds, Steel match is #B steel 63.8 yds
65yd duck(1.5") or 40yd goose (2.25")
$2.08 per shell if TSS is $64/lb
219gr steel@ 5.15 gr/pellet = 42.5 steel pellets
218.5gr TSS @1.009gr/pellet = 216.6 TSSpellets
Total weight= 437.5gr, total pellets = 259

Should be loadable in 3" Cheddite/ch209 SAM1 with LilGun. The 100% steel load uses 36-38gr powder; I'd test it but replacing steel with TSS should reduce pressures.

For a lighter load, you could do 2.75" 20ga with CSD20 wad and 7/8oz total weight. Or use the 3/4oz steel recipes from BPI. I have a spreadsheet built where I input the size steel and size TSS, total load weight, then the # pellets of steel, and it spits out how much steel weight, TSS weight, pellets each, and total pellets. For 3/4oz 20ga I have it set for #2 steel, because you can fit that in there without issue and it gives better ranges. So here's one that gives about the same # of total pellets while saving you some TSS cost:

mix steel 158.6 gr 45 pellets of #2 steel
mix tss 9.5 169.2gr 167 pellets
212 total pellets
327.75 total weight

Anyways, you get the picture. You can use normal steel recipes, reduce the steel and put in TSS, you'll have some open space to fill but nowhere near as much as if you just use TSS. And pressures SHOULD drop vs. straight steel, according to HAL, but it's worth testing it.

I agree with you on the duplex load. The gun i want to use for early teal season is a Remington 1100 LT20. Its only chambered for a 2.75 round so I will need to stick with a 3/4 or 7/8 oz load.BPI load# 71031-W110 or 71031-W111 is kind of what I was thinking but SR4756 is discontinued right?

I have been toying around picking up a 28ga but I also want to pick up a side by side 20ga ...

So many decisions to make

So I have been thumbing through load data and can only find one "Published" load that might be to my likening..

Rio hull - Lil Gun - pt2091 but it's only a 344gr load...if Im going to be duplexing I would like a 7/8 oz.

I would really like to find something 7/8 oz around 1400 fps

Any suggestions? RSI only shows 3' data for 20ga

Fish, I have a 7/8oz 2.75" 20ga CSD20 load ready to go. Used the Fiocchi hull since they're available and I don't trust Herters too much as a cheddite source now.
I keep neglecting to drive and ship the box, the UPS thing is a wee pain, then I think of another load I want and open it up and add more shells heh. Think I'm up to 6 loads in there right now. I HAVE to stop swimming and playing fooseball with my kids and get this thing shipped!

.... Since its really hard to tell if the Herters hulls are Cheddites or not, why not just buy 100 cheddites? I have never loaded the Fiocchis before. Im just curious once you get these loads tested with the Fiocchi hulls how big of a difference they would load in a Cheddite hull... Im trying to learn all of these differances and what effect they have on specs.

One of the loads I'm working on this summer is a 20 ga 9/16 oz load.

Using 9-1/2s (ideal for teal), you end up with approx 230 pellets. At 1400 fps, those give over 60 yds of 1.5" gel penetration.

It's in route to the lab this week....

The 9/16 oz load report came back as follows.

1) 1629 fps, 6430 psi
2) 1680 fps, 7270 psi
3) 1636 fps, 6540 psi
4) 1547 fps, 5320 psi
5) 1716 fps, 7900 psi
6) 1537 fps, 5110 psi

Average: 1624 fps, 6428 psi

Not quite as tight as I'd like to see it, but I'll shoot it like this with no reservations.

With the fairly high velocity, 9-1/2s or 10s may be the way to go with small to medium size ducks.

The 10s (at sea level, 32 degrees, 1624 fps) give 1.5" penetration at 60.6 yds, with 281 pellets in the load.

9-1/2s give 1.5" penetration at 70.6 yds, with 230 pellets in the load.

9s will give 1.5" penetration at 77.5 yds, with 202 pellets in the load.

8-1/2s will give 1.5" penetration at 86.6 yds, with 169 pellets in the load.

8s will give 98.5 yds of 1.5" penetration and 144 pellets in the load.
